Mercedes-Benz presented the new ML450 SUV Hybrid in the New York Autoshow 2009 and announced the start to sell exclusively in the United States market by the end of this year. The hybrid system in the ML450 Hybrid, which was developed within the Global Hybrid Corporation in which Daimler AG, BMW Group, General Motors and Chrysler, has a power train that can operate in a fully electric vehicle, with only gasoline or a combination of both at any time.

The Mercedes-Benz ML450 HYBRID will be manufactured at the plant of the German company in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This hybrid model known as dual mode, was tested on more than 2.5 million miles in testing, is the most efficient in the industry and for the new ML450 HYBRID allows the performance of an SUV with a gasoline engine of eight cylinders and four-wheel drive, with a fuel savings of 60%.

The Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid, which will yield 21 miles per gallon in city and 24 on the road, also qualify under the strict Super Ultra Low Emissions Low Emission Vehicle. At the same time, the ML450 HYBRID delivers an output of 335 horsepower and 318 foot pounds of torque for linear, with a soft and comfortable handling typical of any Mercedes-Benz model.

The hybrid train engine is controlled automatically and without need for additional operations of the driver, thanks to a sophisticated operating system that makes 160 calculations per second and up to 50 million equations to deliver adequate power at all times and always with the total traction 4MATIC system. The heart of this system is two electric motors, clutches and four three rotors, arranged inside the conventional transmission, allowing engineers and designers of Mercedes-Benz retain the same space for passengers and cargo to the model with engine petrol or diesel.

The petrol engine is an Atkinson V6 with 275 horsepower, while the two electric motors generate 83 horsepower and 80, respectively, depending on when the power is needed. The battery of 288 volts of high density is located in the shaft where the wheel would normally emergency, so it does not affect the electrical system in the least space for passengers or for cargo.

The boot system is totally silent and the electric motor operates until they exceed 30 miles per hour speed and then starts the drive with the combination of gasoline engine. The automatic transmission is active with four separate clutches to distribute the power on all four wheels through the traction system 4MATIC permanent integral depending on driving conditions.
